US: 31 DEAD, 228 MISSING IN CALIFORNIA FIRES

CAIRO (Reuters) - The death toll from continuing forest fires in California, southwestern United States, rose to 31 after eight bodies were found in the town of Paradise, How far from San Francisco.

Cori Honia said 228 people had been missing since the fire broke out last Thursday.
Authorities in California said Sunday that fires had killed 23 people.
The Associated Press reported local authorities that the death toll from the fires was the highest in the history of the state. The same number (29) was recorded after the Griffith Park fire in Los Angeles in 1933.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to withhold federal payments from California for managing its forest fires since Thursday.

"Trillions of dollars are given every year to California, with many lives lost, all because of gross forest mismanagement," Donald Trump said on Twitter. "They handled it or there would be no more federal payments."
